Experience
My portfolio includes a variety of topics: women's issues, gardening, youth hostels, travel, food and wine, the gender wage gap, relationships, public speaking, business, health, weddings, fashion, home and interior design, event planning, dress codes, and parenting.
As an editor: I've managed a newsroom and freelancers, contributed to the launch of a
lifestyle publication, and served as interim managing editor of a regional business newspaper
for eight months while in between managing editors. Currently, I'm editor of Skirt! Magazine
in Charlotte, N.C., where I write profiles and personal essays, as well
as being responsible for layout, distribution, and day-to-day
operations. I've also recently completed a book with Gitmo Girl Kristine Huskey called Justice at Guantanamo: One Woman's Odyssey and Her Crusade for Human Rights, published by Globe Pequot Press.
I've been lucky to interview some amazing people, most notably Alice Waters of Chez Panisse and Eve Ensler, playwright and author of The Vagina Monologues.
As a freelance writer, I've successfully pitched and completed stories
ranging from gardening to weddings to food and wine, and have several
repeat clients. I'm a born
multi-tasker, and enjoy working both solo and in groups. I love the
brainstorming process and adore a good group idea session.
I'm creative, hard-working, and able to handle assignments on the fly without getting flustered. I love to learn (which is why I love to write and edit -- every day is full of discovery), and am confident in my ability to handle an assignment on virtually any topic, because I'm not afraid to ask what I don't know and do the necessary research to know what to ask.
